I have been teaching English for more than 10 years. I have seen some students learn very quickly, and can speak English very well even though they have never visited  a foreign country. I want to share with you their secrets for learning English.

Have you ever noticed that once a person learns one foreign language, they can learn other languages more quickly?  That's because they know the techniques and the proper way to study a language.

Read some of my tips for "How to Learn English" here:

Improve your Listening Skill

TIP # 1 Did you know that you can improve your listening skill by practicing your pronunciation.  Your brain can only hear and recognize the sounds that it already knows. So, if you always say words pronounced with katakana sounds, when a native speaker says a word with a native accent, it will be very difficult for you to catch.  Therefore, it is very important that when you study, you DO NOT take notes using katakana.  Click here to hear some examples of words pronounced first with katakana, and then with a native accent.  They are totally different!

1.レストラン      restaurant
2.    ゴジラ            Godzilla
3.    ベーリーグー    very good!
4.   コラボレーション collaboration
5.     サラダ     salad
6.     カットオフ    cut off

Improve your speaking.

Tip #2
Start thinking in English. The trick is to get your brain to instantly create thoughts in English. If you only think in Japanese, then when it is time to speak you will take a long time to translate from your Japanese thought to English words.  Begin with phrases that you can think to yourself in your daily life. For example:

- I'm in a hurry.
- Where did I put my....?
- What shall I have for dinner...?
- I wonder....
- I'm so tired.
- It's a wonderful day today!
- Looks like rain!

Once you master these phrases and say them to yourself everytime you are in a certain situation, then start adding more until all of your thoughts are in English!  Once you find yourself dreaming in English then you will know that you have reached a new level.  When you meet a foreigner, your words will flow out so easily, you will be surprised!

Improve your study habits

Tip #3
Do you just stare blankly at your notebook or textbookk for a long time until you can remember what you are looking reading, but when you close your book you have forgotten everything?

Are you bored with studying grammar and vocabulary and wish it could be more fun?

If your attitude toward studying is not so good, then maybe you need to change your study habits. Everyone knows that to improve your English quickly, you need to study everyday, but that doesn't mean that you have to use a textbook.  There are many different ways to study besides reading a textbook. It is important to study in different ways to keep your motivation up. Here are some different ways you can study to improve your English:

Sunday: Watch YouTube movie clips in English. YouTube has a setting which allows you to turn on captions in English.

Monday: Use a fun English game app on your smartphone.

Tuesday: Go to a fun English class (like at Miami英会話) You can make many friends to enjoy studying with.

Wednesday: Write a journal in English

Thursday: Sing some karaoke songs in English.  You don't have to go to a Karaoke box. You can use YouTube Just search for the name of the song in English and write the words, "lyrics" and "karaoke"

Friday: Read the news in English. A website that I recommend is News In Levels which has news stories in different levels to make it easy to learn. They have articles on many different interesting topics.

Saturday: Review everything you have learned during the week and share it with a study friend.

There! Now, doesn't that sound like fun?  If you follow this plan, you are sure to learn English "in no time" (すぐ).
