こんにちは！アメリカフロリダ州出身、米国籍のジョンです。
1998年に初めて日本に来ました。これはちょっと面白いストーリーです。当時私はハワイに住んでいてパールハーバーで海軍の仕事をしていました。そんな時日本に行く命令を受けたのです。ハワイはとても美しく離れるのが嫌でした。しかし日本に来てみたらとても良い国だとわかり日本に来れたことが幸運に思えました。日本にはとてもたくさんの学びたいことがあり、行ってみたい場所があり、体験したいことがあったのです。日本の方々はとても親切で、安全な国で、日本食はとてもヘルシーです。日本人の考え方をもっと知りたいと思いました。

横須賀米海軍基地での仕事はとてもハードでした。残念ながらほとんどの滞在は海の上となりました。日本語を毎日テキストで勉強して友達相手に練習をしていたのを思い出します。しかしながら日本のカルチャーを十分に体験することはできませんでした。そして2002年にアメリカ本土へ転勤。そこでは3年間、軍の新人を相手にネイビーインストラクターとして働きました。”マスタートレーニングスペシャリスト”の資格を取ったのもこの時期でした。
軍の勤務はアドベンチャーであり、誇りに思っています。しかし心のどこかでいつも日本へ戻って来たいと思っていました。2005年米海軍を後にしました。日本への渡航の前にやっておきたいことがありました。自分の国をもっと見て知りたかったのです。フリーマーケットで全ての所持品を売って、そのお金でバンを買いました。そのバンで約3ヶ月間、アメリカ縦断ドライブの旅に出たのです。ニューヨーク、グランドキャニオン、ハリウッド、エルビスプレスリーの生家など有名な場所を訪れました。そうしてようやく日本行きを決行したのです。

ついに日本に再上陸しました。しかし問題が。。仕事はどうしようか。カフェで働く？路上で"I love NY" のTシャツを売る？米海軍基地での仕事も考えました。でも日本人と共に働き日本の文化を感じながら働きたいという想いがありました。ネイビー時代に講師としての経験があるので英会話を教えたらどうかとある友人が提案してくれました。そこで生徒さんを集め始めました。子供たちにも教えました。カフェで教えたり、生徒さんのご自宅で教えたり、英会話スクールでもアルバイトとして働きました。また幼稚園でも経験を積んだのです。多くの経験をしてついに自分のスクールを立ち上げることにしました。2014年上大岡でマイアミ英会話をスタートさせ、2020年、弘明寺に場所を移しました。

英語を教えるのが大好きです。クラスに来てくださる方は生徒さんでなく友達だと感じています。アメリカの文化を教えていますが会話を通して私も日本の文化を学ばせてもらっています。マイアミスクールは大きいスクールではありません。しかし私達マイアミの友達の輪に加わり英会話を通してあなたの思いをシェアしてくださったらこんなに嬉しいことはありません。

I first came to Japan in 1998. It's a funny story. At that time, I was living in Hawaii and working on a ship in Pearl Harbor. Then I was ordered to come to Japan. I thought Hawaii was a beautiful place and I wanted to stay there. I thought I didn't want to come to Japan. However, after I came to Japan, I felt that I found that Japan is a really nice country and I was really happy to be here. There were so many things to learn, places to see, and experiences to be had. I thought Japanese people were so kind. It is so safe, and the food is so healthy. I wanted to know more about how Japanese people think.
I worked on the a ship in Yokosuka Navy base. It was very hard work and I was often out on the ocean, away from Japan. I studied 日本語 everyday from books, and practiced with my friends. However, because of my work, I couldn't experience Japanese culture as much as I wanted. In 2002 I was transferred back to the U.S. I worked as a Navy Instructor teaching naval warfare to the new recruits for 3 years. There, I earned as special qualification as a "Master Training Specialist".
Being in the Navy was an adventure, and a time I am proud of, but I always felt that I wanted to come back to Japan. So, in 2005 I quit the Navy. Before I came back to Japan to live though, there was something else I wanted to do. I wanted to know and see my own country more. I sold everything I had at a flea market and bought a van. I drove around the U.S for 3 months visiting all the famous places in America like New York, the Grand Canyon, Hollywood, and Elvis Presley's home. After that, I was finally ready to return to Japan.
Well, I did. I returned to Japan, but there was a problem. What would I do for work? Work in a coffee shop? Sell "I love NY" t-shirts on the side of the road? I considered working on the Navy base, but I wanted to be around Japanese people and Japanese culture. An American friend suggested that I try teaching English since I had experience teaching in the Navy. I started gathering many students, and started teaching children as well. I was teaching English in coffee shops, visiting students' homes, and even worked part time in an eikaiwa school and a pre-school. Finally, since I had so much experience teaching English, and I decided I wanted to start teaching my own classes. In 2014 I started Miami Eikaiwa in Kamiooka. Then in 2020 I officially opened my own school in Gumyoji.
I love teaching English. I feel the people who come to my classroom are not only my students, but my friends. Through our conversations I learn about Japanese culture while teaching about American culture. Miami school is not a big school, but I hope you can come and join our circle of friends and share your thoughts with us with English conversation.
